Chemsex Recovery

Most people assume ChemSex is about chasing a better high or better sex. Sometimes it is. But when I sit with men who are trying to stop, something else usually comes up. What they miss most is rarely the drug. It's the feeling of closeness it gave them, or seemed to. Dr. David Fawcett, a leading voice in ChemSex recovery and author of Lust, Men and Meth, puts it simply: the pursuit of intensity can slowly replace the pursuit of meaning, intimacy, and relational safety. I thi

Most people who come into ChemSex recovery focus on one thing: stopping. They want to get off the apps, quit the drugs, and get through withdrawal. This work is crucial and comes first. However, after a few months of sobriety, a different question often arises: what happens to my sex life now? This is a valid question. It deserves more than just "don't do what you were doing." Sobriety tells you what to stop but doesn't guide you on what to build instead. That's where two fra

Why Sober Sex Can Feel So Hard at First If sex without meth feels flat, awkward, or barely there right now, that's not a sign that recovery isn't working. Instead, it's a clear indication that your brain is doing exactly what it has been conditioned to do through repeated exposure to the substance. The neural pathways formed during substance use have become accustomed to the heightened sensations and intense experiences that methamphetamine provides. When those stimuli are re

ChemSex tends to get talked about as something private. Something that happens in your own body, on your own night, behind your own locked door. Even the shame around it is private — a quiet, internal accounting of what you did and what it means about you. But ChemSex does not stay contained to the hours it happens in. It shows up the next morning as the version of you who is too depleted to have a real conversation. It shows up as the weekend plans you cancel for the third t

ChemSex can make intimacy feel immediate, intense, and almost effortless. It can also leave people feeling disconnected from their bodies, their boundaries, their values, and the kind of relationships they truly want. Recovery is not only about stopping or reducing drug use. For many people, it is also about learning how to feel close to others again without needing to be high. It is about rebuilding trust in desire, choice, consent, and connection. That is the heart of the C

If you have been thinking about reaching out for ChemSex recovery support, there is a decent chance you have also been talking yourself out of it. Not tonight. Not yet. Maybe once things calm down. Maybe once I stop on my own first. That kind of delay can sound reasonable from the inside. It can even feel responsible. But often, underneath it, there is a quieter question: Am I actually ready for this? There is another question that matters just as much, especially when substa

The moment can feel almost automatic. A quiet night, a little boredom, a little loneliness, a little stress. The phone comes out. The app opens. A few taps later, sex, drugs, or both feel close enough to reach. For many gay and bisexual men, hookup apps are not just a place where ChemSex gets arranged. They can become part of the pull itself. Grindr, Sniffies, and similar apps did not create ChemSex. People used drugs with sex long before location-based apps existed. But apps

Within LGBTQIA+ communities — and especially among men who have sex with men (MSM) — a public health crisis has been unfolding largely out of sight.
