Bearings Recovery App

The hardest moment in ChemSex recovery usually isn't a whole day. It's ten minutes: late at night, alone, phone in hand, apps open, and the old pull getting louder. Most help isn't there in those ten minutes. Bearings is.

The Bearings App is a harm reduction recovery app for people navigating ChemSex, built here at Metamorphosis Therapy Center in Philadelphia. The app is built and working. We're waiting for Apple to approve our developer account, and then Bearings goes to a small group of testers before it reaches the App Store.

Picture 1 a.m. on a Saturday. You've had a drink, a message just came in, and you can feel the night starting to tilt. You open the app and tap one button: I'm struggling.

Bearings doesn't lecture you. It asks what's happening right now. Are you lonely, bored, hungry, exhausted? What might this urge be turning down: rejection, shame, anxiety, numbness? Naming it takes some of its power away. Then it walks you through the next ten minutes with a breathing timer. Every few minutes you rate the craving, and you watch the line on your screen climb, peak, and start to come down.

Then Bearings shows you something you made on a clearer day: your own reasons, in your own words, and the values you chose. If you've recorded one, it plays a message from you, made the day after the last time, about what it really cost. Your own voice, telling you the truth, at the exact moment your brain is trying to edit out the crash.

If that isn't enough, one tap reaches the people you trust, including the person who agreed in advance to come over or hold your phone. And if you're going to use anyway, Bearings gets you to ChemSex first aid and Never Use Alone before anything else.

What Bearings Hopes to Accomplish

I built Bearings because the moments that decide recovery rarely happen in my office. They happen at 1 a.m., on a Sunday comedown, on the ride home from a party, in the minute after a message lights up your phone. Therapy and group give people the understanding and the community to change. This app is meant to carry a piece of that into the ten minutes where it matters most.

The goal is simple: fewer nights that turn into weekends, fewer people using alone, and more people who believe a slip is information, not a verdict. In a lot of recovery spaces, one slip sends you back to day one. Bearings never resets your count, because starting over at zero can make a slip feel like proof that you've failed, and that shame is often what turns one night into a whole weekend.

Bearings also follows you through the whole arc of recovery, not just the emergencies. It shows you which stage you're in. When you reach the Wall, that flat, gray stretch somewhere between day 46 and day 120 when sober sex feels like nothing and your brain insists it will always be this way, Bearings tells you the truth: the flatness is your brain healing. Each day asks for two small anchors, one action for your recovery and one real contact with another person, and it notices when you've gone two days without reaching anyone. It suggests one small pleasure each day from a list you build, because after stimulants, ordinary joy comes back with practice, even before it feels good.

Bearings won't replace therapy, group, or a sponsor. It's a bridge to them, and a way to keep your bearings until you get there.

Harm Reduction, Built In

Every Goal Is a Real Goal: the app meets people where they are. Some people want to stop using completely, some want to cut down, and some want to use more safely right now. All of those are real goals, and you can change yours any time.

ChemSex First Aid: clear, practical guidance for real situations, including recognizing a G overdose and the recovery position, overamping and meth psychosis, dangerous combinations like poppers with Viagra or Cialis, PrEP, PEP, and doxyPEP, and fentanyl test strips. This is harm reduction information, not medical advice. In an emergency, call 911.

Your Plan, Your Tools: lines you don't cross, warning signs, and what keeps you well; a Friday weekend plan; re-entry mode for the holidays, trips, and coming home from treatment; a private space for sober sex and intimacy with if-then plans for dates and hookups; a guided journal; notes to bring to group or session; and app blockers that pause the apps that pull you back in.

Find Help Tonight: a built-in directory connects you with Crystal Meth Anonymous, Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous, Alcoholics Anonymous, SMART Recovery, 988, Never Use Alone, the Trevor Project, and Trans Lifeline.

Private by Design: everything you put into Bearings stays on your phone. There's no account to create and nothing is sent to a server, so no one, including me, can see what you write. You can lock the app with Face ID, hide it in the app switcher, and erase everything with one tap.

You Don't Have to Wait for an App

The Bearings App is waiting on Apple's approval. When it's ready, it will go to a small group of testers first, and then to the App Store. If you'd like to be one of the first testers, reach out.

If you're struggling with ChemSex right now, you don't have to wait for an app. I offer individual therapy and a ChemSex Recovery Group in Philadelphia, and telehealth across Pennsylvania.
