EMDR for Betrayal Trauma

I'm Alex Kapnek, a Licensed Professional Counselor and Certified Sex Addiction Therapist (CSAT) based in Philadelphia. EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a trauma-focused therapy that helps your brain process and integrate overwhelming experiences so they no longer feel as intense or intrusive. Rather than just talking about what happened, EMDR works directly with how trauma is stored in the body and mind, helping your system move from “this is happening right now” to “this happened, and I'm safe now.”

When Trust Is Broken, Your Nervous System Doesn't Just "Move On"

If you've experienced infidelity, secret sexual behavior, or a partner living a double life, you may feel like your world no longer makes sense. You might find yourself replaying conversations or discoveries over and over; checking phones, emails, or social media compulsively; feeling anxious, on edge, or unable to relax; swinging between anger, grief, and wanting closeness; and questioning your own reality or intuition. This isn't just emotional pain. It's often betrayal trauma, and it lives in the nervous system — which is exactly why it can be so hard to simply "think your way out" of it.

How EMDR Helps With Betrayal Trauma

Betrayal trauma is unique because the person who hurt you is also someone you may still feel attached to. EMDR helps by reducing intrusive thoughts and mental replay, so you're not stuck reliving discoveries or conversations; decreasing emotional reactivity, meaning less panic, less overwhelm, and more stability; restoring trust in yourself by helping you reconnect with your intuition and internal clarity; processing attachment wounds, so you're not stuck in the push-pull of needing closeness while feeling unsafe; and supporting clear decision-making, whether you're trying to repair the relationship or move on.

How It Works

Rather than just talking about what happened, EMDR works directly with how the trauma is stored in your body and mind. Together we help your system move from "this is happening right now" to "this happened, and I'm safe now," so the memories no longer feel as intense or intrusive. In our sessions, we'll first build a sense of safety and stability before approaching the harder material, working at a pace that feels manageable for you. You stay in control throughout, and we only move forward when you're ready. Many people find that experiences which once felt overwhelming gradually lose their charge — not erased, but no longer running the show.

Signs EMDR Could Help You Heal

You might be in the right place if:

You keep replaying conversations, discoveries, or images you can't shut off

You feel constantly on edge, hypervigilant, or unable to relax or sleep

Talk therapy has helped you understand what happened, but the emotional charge is still there

You're stuck in a push-pull of wanting closeness while not feeling safe

You question your own memory, intuition, or sense of reality

You want to feel steadier and clearer — whether you stay in the relationship or leave
