Love Addiction Therapy in Philadelphia

I'm Alex Kapnek, a Licensed Professional Counselor and Certified Sex Addiction Therapist (CSAT). Love addiction is a compulsive pattern around romance and attachment: chasing the high of new love, holding on to people who hurt you, or feeling like you disappear when you're alone. It isn't weakness, and it isn't simply loving too much. These patterns usually begin as a way to survive early experiences of neglect or abandonment, and they can change. I help you understand what the pattern is protecting, heal the wounds underneath it, and build relationships that feel steady instead of consuming. I see clients in person in Bala Cynwyd, just outside Philadelphia, and by telehealth across Pennsylvania. If your struggle centers on compulsive sexual behavior, my sex addiction therapy page is the place to start.

What Is Love Addiction?

Love addiction describes a pattern where a relationship, or the pursuit of one, starts to work like a drug. The intensity of attraction, fantasy, and longing brings relief from loneliness, anxiety, or shame, and losing it feels like withdrawal. Love addiction is not a formal diagnosis in the DSM-5 or ICD-11, and researchers still debate where healthy passion ends and compulsion begins. What is not up for debate is the suffering: obsessive thinking about one person, staying in relationships you know are harming you, and feeling unable to function without a partner or the hope of one. Love addiction is different from sex addiction. The focus is attachment, romance, and emotional dependence rather than sexual behavior, although the two can overlap.

The Love Addiction Cycle

Therapist Pia Mellody described a dynamic many of my clients recognize right away. People who struggle with love addiction are often drawn to partners who are emotionally unavailable, sometimes called love avoidants. The love addict pursues, hoping this person will finally make them feel whole. The avoidant partner pulls back, feeling smothered. Each retreat makes the craving stronger, and each pursuit widens the distance. Breakups, reconciliations, and intense highs and lows can repeat for years. The pull usually feels like chemistry, but it is often familiarity: the relationship recreates an early wound in an attempt to finally resolve it. Seeing the cycle clearly is often the first step out of it.

How I Treat Love Addiction

Therapy starts by mapping your relationship history and the patterns that keep repeating. From there we work on several levels at once. I use EMDR to process the abandonment, neglect, or relational trauma that often sits underneath love addiction, so old fears stop running your choices. Attachment-focused work helps you understand how you learned to bond and how to build a more secure way of connecting. We practice setting boundaries, saying what you need, and tolerating the discomfort of being alone without rushing to fill it. Many clients also find support in Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (S.L.A.A.) or Love Addicts Anonymous alongside therapy. The goal isn't to stop loving. It is to love from a place of choice, with your own life and sense of self intact.

Signs Love Addiction May Be a Problem

You might be in the right place if:

  • You feel empty, anxious, or worthless when you're not in a relationship

  • You keep choosing partners who are unavailable, inconsistent, or hurtful

  • You stay in or return to relationships you know are bad for you out of fear of being alone

  • You lose yourself in a partner and let go of your own friends, interests, or goals

  • Fantasy, obsessive thinking, or checking up on someone takes over your day

  • Intensity and drama feel like love, and calm, steady relationships feel boring
